Since 1974 the ‘Klippel Shield for Preparatory School Cricket’ has been contested between three strong cricket playing schools – Saint Kentigern, King’s School and Southwell School - with the Boys’ School taking stewardship of the Shield on many occasions…but not for the last two years!

That was rectified yesterday when the Boys’ School 1^st XI played King’s School – holders of the Shield for the last two years - in a 35 over match. In what can only be described as an ‘epic’ low scoring match, our boys secured the trophy on the last ball! 

King’s batted first and only made 114 for 9. Our bowlers were ‘miserly’ and we fielded very well to restrict them to a low total. 

At the change of innings, coach Mr Grayson Aspinall said, ‘In games like these, even the small totals are very hard to get! We proved that was the case as we lost wickets at regular intervals. The King’s bowlers proved to be quite a handful and we struggled to build partnerships.’ 

The game came down to the very last over and the last two batsmen from Saint Kentigern, Sammy Hart and Levi Williams, playing for the win. No pressure boys but 10 runs were needed off the last over to win! The two lads dug deep and put the pressure back on King’s by ‘running everything!’ 

With the last ball of the match to be bowled, and the Shield on the line, two runs were needed and Levi Williams smashed a 4! Game over, Shield back in the Boys’ School cabinet! Phew! 

While there have been fantastic individual performances, it was the efforts from all team members working cohesively that produced the result - total commitment, energy and skill won each match! Well done boys!
