National age group tennis success

Three Saint Kentigern students have been crowned 2014 national age group champions on the tennis circuit over the holiday period!

Congratulations to Year 13 College student, Kelly Drew and former student, Paige Hourigan who together won the 18’s doubles at the 18’s New Zealand Championships. Paige also took out the title in the 18’s singles.

Year 8 Boys’ School student and top seed, Chris Zhang was crowned the winner of the 12’s New Zealand Championship singles after winning straight sets the entire way.

Paige and Kelly also teamed together to achieve runner-up success in the Women’s Open Doubles at the New Zealand Championships. Edward Stoica (Year 13) gained runner-up in the 18’s doubles and was a semi-finalist in the singles. Equally notable, Trent Smith (Year 13) secured runner up in the 18’s doubles, William Matheson (Year 13) was a semi-finalist in the 18’s and Shaylee Syme (Year 11) was a semi-finalist in the 16’s champs.

Further regional tennis success saw Freddie Chatwin Cashmore (Year 10) win the Auckland 14’s singles and Victoria Hockley (Year 10) win the Waikato 14’s singles.

Internationally Lana Popovich (Year 11), Liam Stoica (Year 9), and Chris Zhang all represented New Zealand in Australia in December, and William Matheson qualified for the Australia Junior Championships.
