Boys' School Sleepover for a Cause!

Oxfam Trailwalker: Challenge yourself. Challenge poverty.
With the team name, ‘A few good men do it again,’ Boys’ School staff members, Chris Haar, James Eketone, Joe Johansen and Reverend Reuben Hardie are building up to taking on the Oxfam Trailwalker Challenge for the second year in a row. This gruelling event challenges teams of four to walk 100km in no longer than 36 hours – although this hardy team are aiming for an ultrafast time ‘somewhere between’ 12- 18 hours!
The event takes place on the first weekend in April around Lake Taupo, with sponsorship money raised going to provide sanitation and water to remote villages in Papau New Guinea.
The team originally set themselves the goal of raising $2000 – they had not anticipated the overwhelming support from the Saint Kentigern Boys’ School community!
On Friday night, the men organised a fun event for 108 participating boys on campus – in return for a sponsorship pledge from the families. Boys in Years 1-4 enjoyed evening games before going home at 9pm whilst 60 boys in Years 5-8 stayed on to sleepover. Approaching Cyclone Luisi cancelled the plan to set up tents with the boys bunking down in the Jubilee Sports Centre to listen to the whistling winds!
The boys had a great night with giant burgers and hot chips for dinner and games of spotlight and storm the castle. Those that slept over were up at 6.30am for boot camp at 6:30am before a breakfast of bacon and eggs muffins was served. Principal, Mr Peter Cassie was there early to help cook and serve.
And the best part? The current pledge to Oxfam now sits at just under $9000!
The team said that they wanted to inspire the students and Saint Kentigern community with the message that ‘service does not stop at the school gates’ and that we can all make a difference no matter the obstacles. They are very grateful and proud to be representing the community who have come out and fully supported them.
There are many messages of goodwill on the Oxfam site from our families, praising the men for being great role models to the boys – and suggesting they remember to pack plasters!
