Great Start to the Season for College 1st XI Football

May 13, 2013 at 9:33 AM

The 1st XI Football team played their opening game of the Premier League season against Sacred Heart on Saturday. A combination of good play but more importantly an outstanding team work ethic earned Saint Kentigern College a 6-0 win with two goals from Alex Waimora and one each from Jared Gibbs, Michael den Heijer, Tinashe Marowa and Thomas Konusi. This weekend, the 1st XI has another major challenge taking on the 2012 National Champions Mt Albert Grammar. The 12pm kick off at the College will be preceded by the Girls 1st XI also taking on Mt Albert Grammar, kicking off at 10am.

Special mention must also be made of the boys who have earned representative honours this year. Michael den Heijer, Nick Forrester and Matthew Ridenton represented NZ in the Oceania World Cup qualifying tournament in Vanuatu and have now qualified for the U/17 World Cup in Dubai later in the year. Jared Gibbs represented the New Zealand Secondary Schools side which earned the best ever set of results by a New Zealand touring team. They played England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and British Champions Northern Ireland and earned two wins and two draws including victory over Northern Ireland. Alex Waimora and George Lagoda also represented The Solomon Islands senior men's side in World Cup qualifiers and Anusheel Singh represented the U17 Fiji side. With such strength in the team, we are looking forward to a successful season.
