Boys' School Middle School Speech Competition

August 06, 2020 at 10:22 AM

Following on from the Senior School Speech Finals, yesterday it was the turn of our finalists in Years 4-6 to present their speeches.

As always, the speeches were original, entertaining and of an exceptional standard. From Camping Adventures with Dad to Weird Sports, having Tolerance, the history of Bluebird Chips and the effect of Lego on the Imagination, there was a wide range of topics presented by ten most capable, young speakers.

We were pleased to welcome TVNZ news reporter, Kimberlee Downs and director of Head Held High, Kate Laurence to adjudicate; never an easy task when the content and standard of presentation is so high. Our adjudicators were looking for originality, clarity and well-structured speeches, as well as how the audience engaged with each speaker.

Winner, Year 6 student, Toby Wiggleworth, delivered an original speech about the role of his ‘Poppa’ in developing Bluebird Chips. In this highly entertaining delivery, we were all left imagining the huge mountain of potatoes stored in Poppa’s garage in the early years – to his wife’s despair! Runner up was Year 5 student, Hamish Watson who was very animated about the ‘building blocks of our imagination – Lego!

Such was the calibre of the speeches, a further two boys were awarded Highly Commended. In his first year of competing, Year 4 student, Ayden Singh-Ali spoke with confidence and humour about ‘Lockdown,’ whilst Year 5 student, Ben Roberton delivered food for thought with his speech about ‘Tolerance.’

In summing up, Principal Mr Peter Cassie said, ‘A speech that is informative, entertaining, persuasive or with a call to action, will always ‘hit the nail on the head.’ Our young finalists did exactly that!

Well done to MCs, Mihir Samant and Hugo Bricklebank, who kept the afternoon flowing, and to our two pianists, Leo Zhou and Eason Liu for their fantastic performances.

Our sincere thanks to Kimberlee Downs and Kate Laurence for taking the time to come and adjudicate and offer the boys such positive feedback, this was truly appreciated!
