SONday Funday Returns in Full Swing
On a typical mid-autumn Sunday at Shore Road you can hear the cicadas. SONday Funday, however, proved slightly different. Hosted every two years, this event welcomes our families onto campus, swapping their usual weekend routine for something far more memorable.
Across the grounds, parent and son teams arrived at their chosen activity. Between fishing, Peter Cassie’s infamous Corflute Challenge, Bob the Builder, a futsal or tennis tournament, virtual golf, and cake decorating, there was something for every skill set.
One of the most popular activities every time this day rolls around is principal Peter Cassie’s Corflute Challenge. With only one hour to design and build a boat, teams took their nautical architecture seriously. Their corflute creations were brought to the pool with a mix of optimism and varying levels of success. Some designs proved fast and surprisingly seaworthy. Others lasted only moments, drawing plenty of laughter as brave sailors found themselves quickly submerged.
The workshop offered a different pace. Their challenge to fashion a wooden pencil case saw many determined ‘Bob the Builder’ teams put on their hard hats and get to work. Meanwhile, the baking competition produced an impressive spread of cakes that were as creative as they were competitive.
A new addition this year, virtual golf, proved a hit off-site, giving golf-loving dads the chance to pair up with their sons and take on a different kind of challenge.
What sat beneath all the joviality was simply the opportunity to spend time together. The day was littered with conversations between activities, shared wins (or learnings), and a food truck feed at the end. These moments tend to last well beyond the day itself.
SONday Funday continues to be a well-loved part of the school calendar, and we will see our teams back in two years’ time for the next edition.
