Technology shapes the way we learn, work, communicate, and solve problems. At Saint Kentigern College, we use digital technologies purposefully to enrich learning, foster creativity and critical thinking, and equip students with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Technology is not an end in itself. It is a powerful tool that enhances learning, strengthens engagement, expands opportunities, and helps students become confident, capable, and responsible digital citizens. 

Why Digital Learning? 

Digital technologies enrich learning by providing students with greater opportunities to explore, create, collaborate, and communicate. Used thoughtfully, they help students develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to succeed in an increasingly digital world. 

Through digital learning, students can: 

• Access learning resources and feedback anytime and anywhere 

• Collaborate effectively with teachers and peers 

• Create, present, and share their learning using a range of digital media 

• Develop critical thinking, research, problem-solving, and communication skills 

• Build digital literacy and learn to use technology safely, ethically, and responsibly 

• Gain experience with the digital tools and platforms commonly used in tertiary education and the workplace 

Our approach combines the strengths of high-quality teaching with the opportunities offered by digital technologies. By blending traditional and digital methods, we ensure technology enhances learning, strengthens relationships, and supports every student to achieve their best.

Student Device Choices 

Saint Kentigern has been a leader in digital learning for more than 25 years and was one of the first schools in New Zealand to implement a one-to-one device programme. 

Saint Kentigern recognises that students have different learning preferences and technology needs. 

The Student Device Programme (SDP) ensures every student has access to a device that supports their learning throughout the school day. 

The programme provides: 

• Devices selected and tested for educational use 
• Compatibility with school learning systems 
• Pre-configured software and settings 
• Access to school-managed services and support 
• Warranty and accidental damage protection  
• On-site hard ware repair and loan devices where required 

Families may purchase devices outside the programme; however, devices must meet the College's minimum requirements. 

Digital Citizenship 

Being successful in a digital world requires more than technical skills. It requires good judgement, strong character, and the ability to use technology responsibly, ethically, and with purpose. 

At Saint Kentigern College, we encourage students to become responsible digital citizens who: 

• Use technology respectfully, safely, and ethically 

• Protect their privacy and personal information 

• Communicate thoughtfully and appropriately online 

• Respect copyright, intellectual property, and the work of others 

• Critically evaluate information and recognise misinformation 

• Understand and manage online risks 

• Contribute positively to digital communities and online discussions 

Digital citizenship is embedded throughout College life. Through our curriculum, pastoral care, and wellbeing programmes, students develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to navigate an increasingly connected world with confidence and integrity.

Online Safety and Wellbeing 

The wellbeing and safety of our students is a priority. We believe that students thrive when they learn to use technology in ways that are safe, balanced, and purposeful. 

We work in partnership with students and families to promote positive digital habits through: 

• Online safety and digital citizenship education 

• Secure and age-appropriate learning platforms 

• Robust cybersecurity and privacy protections 

• Clear expectations for responsible technology use 

• Guidance on screen time, healthy habits, and digital wellbeing 

• Ongoing support from teachers, pastoral staff, and wellbeing programmes 

We encourage families to maintain open and regular conversations about technology use, online experiences, and the opportunities and challenges of living in a connected world. By working together, we can help students develop the confidence, resilience, and judgement needed to navigate the digital environment safely and successfully. 

Mobile Phones 

The College's approach to mobile phones is designed to support student learning, wellbeing, and meaningful engagement in school life. By minimising distractions during the school day, we help students remain focused in class, build positive relationships, and participate fully in learning and co-curricular activities. 

Students are expected to follow College guidelines regarding mobile phone use and to use digital devices responsibly and appropriately when required for learning.

Support for Families 

Technology is most effective when schools and families work together. 

Parents and caregivers can support their child's digital learning by: 

• Encouraging responsible technology use
• Providing an appropriate learning space at home
• Discussing online safety and wellbeing
• Ensuring devices are charged and ready for school each day
• Reading College communications regarding digital learning initiatives
