Nicole Mapp - Leading Through Service
At its best, policing is measured not only by how it responds to harm, but by how effectively it prevents it. For the past 17 years, Nicole Mapp has built her career around that principle, championing a prevention-led approach founded on trust, education and early intervention.
Beginning her policing career in neighbourhood policing, vulnerable children and family harm in Counties Manukau, Nicole developed a deep understanding of the complex challenges facing young people, families and vulnerable communities. These frontline experiences reinforced her belief that lasting community safety is built not only through enforcement, but through relationships that foster trust, resilience and positive choices.
That philosophy found its fullest expression as a School Community Officer. Working alongside students, schools and whānau, Nicole became a trusted presence in the lives of young people, using education, mentorship and early intervention to help steer them towards positive futures. Her contribution was measured not simply by the situations she responded to, but by the opportunities she created for problems to be avoided altogether.
Today, as National Youth Advisor at Police National Headquarters, Nicole is helping embed that same approach across New Zealand Police. Supporting frontline staff and delivering national training, she helps shape how Police engage with young people and school communities, extending the impact of her work well beyond the communities where her own career began.
Her dedication has been recognised through the New Zealand Police Long Service and Good Conduct Award, while her leadership in improving staff wellbeing as Health and Safety Representative at Manurewa Police Station earned a finalist award at the 2019 public sector-wide Health and Safety Representative of the Year Awards.
Beyond policing, Nicole is also a registered wedding celebrant and coach of school netball and touch rugby, where she continues to invest in people and communities with the same compassion, integrity and purpose that have defined her career. As her story continues to unfold, it points to the difference one life can make when lived in pursuit of excellence in service of others.
