Music Gala Shows College Music Range
Over two nights, the College Music Gala brought together every ensemble on the programme. All school ensembles were featured, including some special performances from our national-award winning chamber group and instrumental solo competition winner. The evening also served as a warm-up for the upcoming KBB Music Festival.
Night one opened with the Jazz Orchestra, Servanda Strings, and One O'Clock Big Band, before the Simple Solutions Saxophone Quartet, fresh from their win at the National Chamber Music finals, took the stage. Servanda Strings brought their own spectacle to the Star Wars theme, performing with glowing, lightsaber-style bows in an array of colour. The Big Band and Symphony Orchestra closed the evening, but it was the Big Band's performance backing a live Mario Kart competition, played out in full character hats, that had the audience fully engaged.
Night two shifted the focus to strings and symphonic sound, with the MacFarlan Strings, Chamber Orchestra, Sinfonia, Symphonic Band, and Concert Band each taking their turn. The night's comedic entertainment came courtesy of Sinfonia and the Symphonic Band, who each brought out the rubber chickens for Attack of the Rubber Chickens and The Great Rubber Chicken Galop, squawks and all.
Between the glowing bows, rubber chickens, a Mario Kart showdown, the Music Gala proved the College’s ensembles can master the classics and still know how to have a laugh.
