The annual art show for Auckland Intermediate Schools was officially opened last night at the Art Centre at Corban Wine Estate in Henderson. Corban is known for its support for the arts and is proving a great venue for the show.

This year, fourteen Year 7 and 8 boys had work selected to represent the School. The works submitted varied from clay penguins and animals to cast glass and hand-colored prints.

Our feature artwork was a collection of poppies, made by the boys in Year 7 and 8, arranged in a white cross set out on the floor. The poppy project started out as a whole school project to commemorate the 100 anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli. It was such a powerful work that it deserved to be seen by the larger public.

The Year 8 boys have had a focus on clay and cast glass this year. The projects that they were assigned were a penguin, a cast glass object, a teapot or other round object, and working on a potter's wheel. In all, the boys were exposed to the many processes needed to make objects out of clay and an understanding of how unique objects are made.

In Year 7, the boys have been learning about print making. This started with simple card prints that were retouched with ink pens. They then moved on to a four coloured wood cut print, using a simple still life setting as the subject.

The skill level this year was high and the boys who represented the school worked diligently to complete all there projects to an excellent standard. Well done!
