Young Environmentalists in Action

21 June 2024

On Thursday, 20 June, 26 enthusiastic boys from Year 7 and Year 8 visited a farm in Brookby to participate in the Trees for Survival programme. The primary objective of this trip was to support reforestation efforts on selected farms by planting native New Zealand trees cultivated at SKBS. This year, the focus was on an especially challenging terrain: a steep hillside that is highly susceptible to erosion. The stabilizing root systems of the newly planted trees are expected to provide significant benefits to this area by reducing erosion and promoting soil stability.

The weather was fortunately on our side, which made the planting process smoother and more enjoyable for everyone involved. Over the course of the day, the boys managed to plant an impressive total of over 800 trees. This achievement is a testament to their hard work and dedication to the cause of environmental conservation.

In addition to the planting activities, the boys enjoyed a fantastic lunch, which provided a much-needed break and a chance to refuel. The day was further enriched by a special demonstration on sheep shearing. The boys watched attentively as the Farmer Mike showcased the intricate process of shearing a sheep. As a souvenir, each student received some fresh wool to take home, adding a tangible and memorable element to their experience.

Overall, the day was a great success and left a lasting impression on the students. They not only contributed to a valuable environmental initiative but also gained hands-on experience and knowledge about sustainable practices and the importance of reforestation. It was truly a memorable and educational day for everyone involved.
