Year 8 Camp at Motutapu Outdoor Education Centre
In mid-June, 160 Year 8 students headed to Motutapu Outdoor Education Centre for a week designed to challenge them and build their appreciation of the natural world. They were supported by twelve staff members and six dedicated parent volunteers.
Despite being mid-winter, the weather delivered clear skies and calm seas, perfect conditions for outdoor learning and adventure. Activities included kayaking, hiking, high ropes, and the Survivor Challenge, with students tested physically, mentally, and emotionally throughout the week. Camp also ran as a friendly competition, with points awarded for participation, values, and dorm cleanliness. In a thrillingly close result, just one point separated first and second place, with Simon Wood’s tutor group securing both top spots. SGW(A) was named overall winner.
The experience helped students face fears and grow in confidence. “The Burma Tunnels helped conquer my fear of the dark,” said Timmy Wong. “The high ropes helped overcome my fear of heights.” Tom Robinson added, “The Motutapu Challenge really tested our mettle and teamwork, but it was rewarding and fun.”
Thank you to the staff and parents who gave their time and energy to create such a memorable week. It was a significant milestone for these students on their journey through Middle School.
