Year 7s open their world to grandparents

11 November 2025

There was no shortage of smiles and reminiscing at this year’s College Year 7 Grandparents Day. With guests travelling from all over New Zealand, the morning drew an impressive crowd of 200 grandparents, eager to spend time with us.

Over morning tea, grandparents reconnected and swapped anecdotes, before being officially welcomed by Associate Principal Duncan McQueen, whose trademark wit and warmth quickly set the tone for the day. His remarks offered both laughter and reflection, perfectly capturing the joy of seeing two generations come together in a shared learning environment.

Grandparents then joined their grandchildren in classrooms for a showcase of the year’s learning and creative achievements. Everything from projects and radio plays, to performances and musical items were presented. Students also shared their subject work and the integration of technology within this learning. The classroom portion of the day finished with an enlightening interview, with some grandparents divulging the naughtiest thing they did at school or what happened if they didn’t do their homework.

Families then went on a short tour of the campus before gathering in the Chapel for an assembly. College Principal Damon Emtage spoke about the heritage and importance of grandparents and the depth of learning and strong intergenerational bonds that characterise the Saint Kentigern community. The Year 7 Service Awards were presented and various items from our talented students were performed.

A stirring performance from the Pipe Band farewelled our grandparents, as many of them headed to Saints Café to have lunch with their grandchildren. It was a wonderful day enjoyed by all.
