Professional Workshops For Senior Drama Students

August 07, 2019 at 12:12 PM

Over the past few days, our Senior College drama students had the benefit of input and guidance from NZ actor, comedian and recipient of the 2019 Billy T James Award, Kura Forester from the Massive Company. Massive is an Auckland Based Theatre company that creates all of their own work and has been producing professional theatre for over 28 years.

Over the course of Term 3, drama students in Years 11-13 will be working on their NCEA Devising Units and each class was treated to a 2 hour, fast-paced, practical workshop focussed on the art of developing ideas, and creating dynamic, original and innovative works. Our students really valued the mentorship Kura provided and the workshops left them motivated and inspired.

The drama department works with Massive Company each year as their work is relevant, powerful and contemporary, and they have a special focus on creating pathways for young aspiring actors. Head of Drama at the College, Mrs Acheson says, ‘Many young New Zealand actors begin their careers in the ensemble cast of a Massive Theatre company production and introducing our keen Drama students to the company can open doors for our students. Massive Company also has a whanau-based approach to the work which aligns with our own department philosophy.’

In recent years, 2014 Deputy Head Boy, Lloyd David went on to train with Massive Company and is now a stalwart on the Auckland theatre scene, most notably, in recent times, with Pop Up Shakespeare.

Massive runs free workshops for students from age onwards and it is open to everyone. Look them up www.massivecompany.co.nz
