Instrumentalists In Fine Form

23 May 2025

This year’s Boys' School Instrumental Competition showcased the depth of talent from both Middle and Senior School performers. Held in front of their peers and guest judge Kirsten Scouller, Director of Performing Arts at King’s School, the finals scratched the surface of musical ability and dedication from among the young performers.

The Middle School finalists were a strong cohort, with Boyi Yujin’s expressive violin performance taking out first place. His piece demanded technical precision and dynamic range, both delivered with confidence and control. George Sun placed second with a piano performance marked by expressive phrasing and musical maturity. Third place went to Eason Zhu on clarinet, who impressed with his warm tone and steady execution.

In the Senior School division, pianist Cyrus Tong earned top honours with a jazzy, expressive performance that balanced technical flair with musical sensitivity. Equal second went to Gavin Chen, whose warm and assured piano playing stood out, and trumpeter Austin Watson, whose sombre and beautifully controlled piece reflected his ongoing growth as a musician. Aaron Zhao’s gentle guitar piece, rich in texture and control, secured him third place. Kristen also made special mention of Thomas Bottomley on the pipes with his crowd pleasing piece Pumpkin’s Fancy, saying as a Scottish woman it brought a tear to her eye.

Across the board, the performers showed poise, preparation, and musicality beyond their years. Judge Kirsten Scouller praised the standard of playing and the evident dedication from each finalist.
