Girls’ School Year 7s ‘Lean In’ Camp

11 November 2025

Earlier this term, our Year 7 cohort headed to the Dilworth Campus in Mangatawhiri for a three-day camp that brought adventure, teamwork, and plenty of laughter. Set among rolling hills and native bush, the Mangatawhiri site proved to be the perfect backdrop for students to step outside their comfort zones, strengthen friendships, and challenge themselves in new ways.

From the moment we left Shore Road, the girls embraced every opportunity thrown their way. The Adrenalin Forest high ropes course was a standout, with students pushing themselves to climb higher, reach further, and encourage one another across bridges and swing elements. Whether conquering the zipline or tackling unfamiliar obstacles, each girl showed impressive courage and determination.

Camp provided the perfect setting for collaboration and connection. Activities such as the Karangahake Gorge Bike trail, Bouldering, River plunges, Theatre Sports, the annual Quiz Night and even the daily cabin inspection, required students to communicate clearly, problem solve under pressure, and support one another’s ideas. It was inspiring to watch groups grow more cohesive each day, celebrating small victories and learning how to work together through setbacks. Even the quieter moments allowed the girls to bond with peers they may not usually spend time with, creating new friendships that continue to grow back at school.

No Year 7 Camp would be complete without the legendary Mangatawhiri Mud Run. This year’s edition was a messy, muddy triumph as students waded, crawled, and slid through the course with enthusiasm (and a lot of shrieking!). Covered from head to toe in mud, the girls finished the run beaming with pride and a strong sense of achievement.

One of the most valuable aspects of camp is the chance for students to step into greater independence. From managing their gear to making decisions as a group, the girls demonstrated maturity and resilience. Many discovered new strengths within themselves, whether leading a team, trying something unfamiliar, or simply giving something a go despite initial nerves.

By the end of the week, our students returned home tired, happy, and full of stories. We are incredibly proud of the way the girls represented our school, supported one another, and embraced every challenge with enthusiasm.

Mangatawhiri 2025 will surely be remembered as the moment our Year 7s truly leaned in, developing confidence, courage, and a stronger sense of who they are as learners and leaders.
