Dressed by the Book

Putting on a costume of a beloved character, at any age, carries a touch of excitement. There’s something about wearing their clothing that invites you to embody the characteristics that you admire in them. 

Our youngest students could barely contain their energy as they arrived dressed as their favourite storybook characters, each clutching the book that inspired their costume. Parents and caregivers were close behind, eager to see what creativity others had summoned for the occasion.

From their classrooms, the children set off together and paraded around the Preschool boardwalk to the applause of onlooking families. All the usual suspects were accounted for: a couple of Very Hungry Caterpillars, a Tiger Who Came to Tea, Paddington Bear, and Tinkerbell. The costumes spoke for themselves, evidence of creative children and some very handy parents. An air vent repurposed as a caterpillar hinted strongly at a builder dad on the loose.

While Book Day is a familiar occasion for many, the joy a story brings is fresh every time the pages are opened. Nurturing a love of reading builds creativity, imagination, and vocabulary – all good things our little ones are developing.
