Boys’ School Prefects Officially Commissioned
The Boys’ School Prefect team of nineteen strong were officially commissioned into their roles on 12 February. The ceremony invited Trust Board members, guests from the College, and family, along with students and staff to witness the pledge of these Year 8s to lead with respect, integrity, service, excellence, and love.
The room was addressed by several key individuals throughout the ceremony. Principal Peter Cassie delivered words of encouragement to the leaders, Rev Reuben Hardie called them to servant leadership, and College Principal Damon Emtage introduced a guest who knows intimately what it means stand in the new prefect’s shoes.
Returning to the place he spent Years 5 to 8, College Head Boy, George McGuinness, shared his leadership philosophy with the room. Throughout his Saint Kentigern journey so far, he has realised the importance of principled decision making in the mundane.
“Prefect roles give you responsibility, but they do not automatically make you a leader. Leadership is earned through your actions and through the way people feel after interacting with you.” His reflections hang in the balance as a challenge to the prefects named and an encouragement to those without a formal title.
The final speech of the morning was given by Head Boy Edward Moon. He outlined his intentions as a leader in the school, “to contribute to making our school a place where every boy is included, valued, and proud to belong.” With that, he announced a lofty personal challenge of learning every student’s name by the end of the year. “Feel free to quiz me,” he ventured. Concreting a challenge that quantified his intention to value every boy he stood before.
Within the wider Senior school cohort, there will be an opportunity for every boy to undertake leadership roles. We look forward to seeing the contributions of this Year 8 group, with Edward, deputy Head Boy George Doole, and the team at the helm.
