A good-for-the-soul Grandparents Day
The Girls’ School murmured with excitement as anticipation grew for one of the most treasured events of the year. With some travelling from across New Zealand, it was especially touching to see the warm embraces as girls proudly welcomed their grandparents to the school.
As the gymnasium filled, the Orchestra performed a selection from their repertoire, setting the tone for a morning of celebration. Principal Marianne Duston then welcomed guests, reflecting on the joy of seeing generations come together, before introducing performances from The Wizard of Oz musical. The lively ‘Jitterbugs’ dance and a tender rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow were both equally captivating, while a new hip-hop group brought an infectious burst of energy and delight.
After the assembly, grandparents joined their granddaughters in classrooms to share in their learning and admire work from throughout the year. The book stand in the foyer returned once again, inviting families to donate a storybook with this now becoming a cherished and growing school tradition.
The morning offered a restful pause from routine: a chance to chat, laugh, and connect across generations; and proof, perhaps, that morning tea with grandparents is good for the soul.
