The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced, forward-thinking educational leader to join the Senior Leadership Team as Deputy Principal (Curriculum), commencing Term 1 2027 or by mutual agreement.
The role leads curriculum strategy, assessment, reporting and the effective use of academic data across Years 1–8, ensuring every boy experiences a rigorous, connected and developmentally appropriate curriculum.
The Deputy Principal (Curriculum) oversees curriculum planning and review, assessment systems, academic reporting, curriculum documentation and evidence-informed improvement. They will lead Heads of Department and Curriculum Leads, translating curriculum intent into strong classroom practice.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic and Curriculum Leadership
- Lead curriculum strategy, planning, documentation, scope and sequence, review and improvement across Years 1–8.
- Ensure curriculum priorities align with the School’s strategic direction, values, special character and developments in the New Zealand Curriculum.
- Oversee assessment, diagnostic testing, moderation, reporting and academic evaluation.
- Use achievement data to identify strengths, gaps, trends and priorities for support or extension.
- Ensure reporting is clear, accurate, purposeful, reliable and manageable.
- Lead, coach and support Heads of Department and Curriculum Leads, establishing clear expectations, goals and reporting rhythms.
- Ensure planning, teaching, assessment and reporting are coherent and connected.
- Work with the Deputy Principal (Professional Practice) to strengthen classroom implementation without adding unnecessary workload.
- Lead agreed curriculum initiatives, ensuring innovation has clear purpose, implementation and impact measures.
- Work with Learning Support and Enhanced Learning leaders to support students needing additional assistance, extension or assessment accommodations.
- Contribute to whole-school leadership, strategic planning, curriculum review and ERO processes.
- Maintain a visible teaching presence and contribute to parent evenings, Open Days, academic communication, Chapel, House, co-curricular and community life.
Educational Leadership
- Proven curriculum leadership, including development, implementation, review and improvement.
- Ability to set direction, lead curriculum teams and translate strategy into practice.
- Commitment to academic excellence, continuous improvement and evidence-informed decision-making.
- Strong knowledge of curriculum design, assessment, reporting, academic data and student achievement analysis.
- Understanding of inclusive curriculum practice, learning support and academic extension.
- Ability to make complex curriculum and assessment information clear and usable.
- Teaching qualification, current New Zealand teacher registration and a university degree; postgraduate study desirable.
- Strategic thinker with strong practical implementation, planning, organisation and project management skills.
- Able to inspire, support and challenge others through excellent communication and relationships.
- Demonstrates analytical judgement, attention to detail, professionalism, integrity and alignment with Saint Kentigern’s values and special character.
- A senior leadership opportunity to influence educational excellence across Years 1–8 within a collaborative and experienced SLT.
