Writing Tips From Literary Treasure

June 27, 2016 at 11:36 AM

When it comes to receiving writing tips, who better to get them from than New Zealand literary treasure, Tessa Duder! The author of the critically acclaimed Kiwi classic Alex, visited the College to lead creative writing workshops for selected Middle School students.

The Year 8 extension English class had written children’s stories and was fortunate to receive feedback from Tessa on their writing. She also worked with the students to develop their characterisation and build a compelling narrative. Creative writers in Year 7 were about to start work on a narrative unit, so Tessa imparted her wealth of knowledge about writing strategies and took them through a number of creative writing activities. Year 9 students were privileged to get advice on how to plan their writing and how to keep a reader engaged.

With her extensive publishing career, Tessa was able to give an insight into the life of a professional writer and the process of having a book published. Her encouraging and facilitative style certainly inspired the students to consider their writing techniques and what they can add to writing repertoire!
