March 19, 2013 at 2:07 PM

Mike Den Heijer.jpgWe congratulate three of our College boys who have been selected in the New Zealand U 17 Football team to play in the World Cup Qualifiers in Vanuatu from 17-26 April.

Mike Den Heijer, Nick Forrester and Matt Ridenton have all been selected for the team with a further two students, Jared Gibbs and Ross McPhee, having been part of the final 30 selection squad.

The three Year 13 boys who were selected are stalwarts of our Premier 1st XI team: Mike has been a College football player of note since Year 7. He is a defensive midfielder who also plays for the Three Kings U19 side. Nick joined the College last year and quickly established himself on the team as a strong, aggressive player in central defence.  Matt is the Sports Prefect this year and Captain of 1st XI. He has also been at College since Year 7 and is an attacking mid-fielder who is also a top scorer for NZ in the National Youth League.  Matt has just signed for Auckland City Senior team in the O league.

Thomas Konusi is another player of note who played for the Auckland City U20 team to win the New Zealand U20 competition. Thomas, along with Mike, Matt, Nick, Jared and Ross are also part of the Talent Accelerated Programme in preparation for the U20 World Cup being held in New Zealand in 2015.

Two of our boarders, Alex Waimora and George Ladoga from the Solomon Islands have also received recognition with their selection to their country’s National Senior Men’s Football squad of 22 players to play in World Cup. The boys will have their first game against Tahiti on 22 March and, if selected, will also play against the New Zealand All Whites a week later on 26 March.

Congratulations to all these boys, we are proud of your achievement.
