Premier Netball Runners Up in Televised Competition

June 03, 2015 at 1:58 PM

In their ‘first final’ of the season, our Premier Netball team faced a strong Mt Albert Grammar School (MAGS) in the final round of the televised College Netball Competition. These college games were played as the curtain raiser for the ANZ Netball Championships, with the ever-present television camera crew adding an element of pressure to the game!

After wins against Auckland Girls Grammar, Sacred Heart and Southland High, and an earlier loss to MAGS, the team were delighted to make it to the final and have the opportunity to play MAGS again. It’s great to face such tough opposition so early on in the season and under such pressurised conditions. It gave our players a chance to put into practice things they had identified through video analysis and take steps to improve their game – but there is still work to be done! MAGS kept the pressure on and took the title 43-32.

Despite the lead, our team fought back hard. They lost the first quarter by 4 goals, the second by 4 goals, drew the third quarter and lost the final quarter by 3 goals. Captain, Amorangi Malesala shot 25/27 (93%) missing only 2 goals in the whole game.

This whole competition has shown the girls that they have the potential to perform at the highest level and compete with the best in the country. Some hard work and fine tuning will set them in good stead for our next encounter and the next round of competitions.

The Auckland Netball Competition is now underway with one game played and won against Epsom Girls Grammar. The team’s second game is against Aorere at 9.30am this Saturday at the AMI Netball Centre. The girls would love to see you there in support!
