June 29, 2018 at 3:46 PM

Our College choirs once again represented Saint Kentigern with professionalism and flair at the annual New Zealand Choral Federation (NZCF) ‘The Big Sing.

The Massed Choir, together with the College Chamber Orchestra, opened the whole festival and were the largest performing group in the competition with over 120 students on stage. This choir attracts students of all ages who love to sing and they were pleased to earn a Highly Commended award.

The newly formed Middle College Girls’ Choir earned a Commended Award and was complemented by the adjudicator for their ‘assured performance’ and ‘great presence on stage.’ The choir also featured two student accompanists: Year 10 Student, Esther Oh and Year 11, Student Catherine Chang.

Our Premier Choir, Kentoris was placed in the highest category of awards receiving a Distinction, and was also awarded Runner-up for the Best Recital by a Mixed Choir, presenting Sir James MacMillan’s ‘O Radiant Dawn’ and Thomas LaVoy’s ‘Neither the Moon by Night.’  The latter piece was commissioned this year for Kentoris, setting the College Psalm 121.

Once again, Kentoris been selected to compete in the National Finale being held in the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington in late August.  Selection into the National Finale puts our students in the ‘Top 24’ choirs nationally, from the original 270 choirs that competed across the country.

Our Choir leader, Desmond Yong and Arts Prefect, Molly Griffiths were featured on Maori TV as part of a feature about the Big Sing festival, speaking confidently about their passion for music and about the role of choirs in Secondary Schools. https://www.maoritelevision.com/news/education/auckland-youth-take-stage-big-sing
