Middle College Music Evening
October 25, 2017 at 2:55 PM
Our younger musicians took to the stage last night for an informal, relaxed musical evening shared with family and friends in a fantastic display of emerging talent. The Year 7-10 students, who are learning an instrument, were given this opportunity to perform to an audience in a relaxed, supportive setting, to help build confidence and gain experience.
Many our students take part in the itinerant music programme, taking advantage of the specialist music staff who provide lessons each week on a wide range of instruments. Growing and gaining strength each year, the programme currently has over 400 students either learning an instrument or receiving voice tuition from 35 different specialist itinerant music teachers.
Opening with the Saint Kentigern No.2 Pipe band performing ‘Highland Cathedral,’ the performances throughout the night went on to include a range of solo artists and groups, with voice and piano proving to be the most popular.
The penultimate group of the night was the College Wind Band - a group that came together solely to perform at the evening. Students who had not yet played in any of the College large ensembles were invited, without audition, to play alongside more experienced musicians for two well-known known pieces from the Concert Band repertoire, ‘Dreamsong’ and ‘Ignite the Night.’ With only five rehearsals, the band performed amazingly! Many of these students will audition for the Concert Band or Big Band in 2018 and it is hoped that this experience will help prepare them for moving into the premier music groups.
The evening was a stunning array of talent and a love for music. Well done to all the students for their effort!
