Medals and Records for College Cyclists

September 07, 2015 at 11:42 AM

The elite cyclists from the College were put to the test during the New Zealand Individual Cycling Championships over the weekend. The event featured three disciplines – time trial, hill climb and criterium – providing a thorough examination of the riders’ range of skills and strengths. The time trial, held at Panmure on Saturday morning, pitted the rider against the clock. The out-and-back course calls for bike-handling ability to minimise time loss during braking and cornering. This was followed by a gruelling hill climb up Mt Wellington, where the competitors’ legs and lungs suffered as they scaled the peak. The criterium on Sunday at Highbrook combined speed and strategy, as points were allocated at the end of each lap which contributed to the overall title.

The Saint Kentigern team achieved some fantastic results, led by Premier Boys’ Team captain James Fouche. James won the U20 boys’ time trial and criterium as well as the overall title, as well as setting a new record of 10m 51.82s in the time trial, knocking nearly 10 seconds of the previous mark! He now holds the U17 and U20 records and Saint Kentigern holds the time trial record in four of the five boys’ categories.
