College Science Fair Projects

September 25, 2020 at 10:26 AM

Due to the disruptions of 2020, the NIWA Science Fair looked slightly different from previous years. The College Year 7 students spent this term researching and collecting data to present their varied projects digitally.

The top 20 projects were selected by teachers and put onto boards for a panel of our Science teachers to judge. The judges selected the top 10 projects to be sent through to the regional competition in Manukau. Unlike other years, when the students were present in person to be interview by the NIWA judges, this year, selected students were interviewed via ‘Zoom’.

Year 7 student, Violet Tayor entered her project, ‘Covid Crisis Cupcakes’ into the Consumer Science category and was awarded a special prize for her efforts.  Violet’s project looked at different types of flours and how they affect the weight and height of cupcakes. In her testing, Violet found that coconut flour was the least favoured as it only reached 3cm in height, whereas wholemeal flour reached 5.175cm, which was the highest.

Each project was assessed on their scientific measurements, fair testing, analysis of the results, returning to reflect on the hypothesis and considering any experimental error.

Well done to all students for their efforts.
