An opening has arisen for an enthusiastic and passionate Teacher of Te Reo Māori to join our team at the Boys’ School.
Key duties and responsibilities:
- Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging Te Reo Māori lessons across different year levels, ensuring alignment with the New Zealand Curriculum and school programmes.
- Differentiate learning activities to cater for students with varying levels of fluency, from beginners to advanced speakers.
- Incorporate tikanga Māori (customs and practices) and mātauranga Māori (knowledge systems) into lessons to deepen cultural understanding.
- Use a variety of teaching strategies, resources, and technologies to foster oral language, reading, writing, and listening skills in Te Reo Māori.
- Model and promote Te Reo Māori me ōna tikanga (the Māori language and its cultural practices) across the school community.
- Support the school’s commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi by embedding bicultural practices in teaching and learning.
- Contribute to school events, assemblies, and special occasions (e.g., pōwhiri, karakia, waiata, kapa haka) to foster Māori language and cultural presence.
- Encourage all students to value and respect Te Reo Māori as a taonga (treasure) and integral part of New Zealand identity.
- Establish a classroom atmosphere that reflects manaakitanga (care), whanaungatanga (relationships), and rangatiratanga (leadership/agency).
- Provide a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where students are confident to take risks and use Te Reo Māori.
- Celebrate student achievements in Te Reo Māori and encourage pride in their learning journey.
- Collaborate with colleagues to integrate Te Reo Māori into wider curriculum areas.
- Act as a resource and support for staff in developing their own use of Te Reo Māori.
- Registered NZ teacher with valid practicing certificate
- Teaching degree or equivalent education and/or experience
- Detailed knowledge, understanding and experience of current teaching methodologies and assessment practices
- Ability to relate effectively to young people, colleagues and other stakeholders with strong relationship management skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Positive and collaborative team member, showing enthusiasm and commitment to promoting their faculties and respect to staff
- Willingness to uphold the special character and culture of Saint Kentigern and commitment to the co-curricular programme
- Strong understanding of health and safety and committed to upholding and role modelling best practice.
