Congratulations to the Year 11 team of Micah Chen, Jaden Lee, Quentin Lemusu-Vuletich, and Matthew Stubbs for winning the recent 2024 New Zealand Secondary School’s Case Competition.
They were selected as one of only six entries to present to judges at Massey University after completing an online video submission based on the topic of New Zealand co-operatives and how to resolve some of the potential social and environmental issues faced by this organisation. Their chosen business was Fonterra and included amongst other things an innovative solution of farming Asparagopsis (Red Seaweed) as a supplement to dairy cattle feed to help reduce methane emissions. Current trials around the world have shown that this could reduce emissions by up to 90%.
Students are given the case study and competition questions and have a week to produce and submit a 10-minute video presentation on the chosen topic. Feedback is given to the top entries by the judging panel, and they have 48 hours to modify their presentation ready to deliver in person at the finals.
The competition is the largest high school case competition in NZ, run by an all-student executive committee and hopes to develop the entrepreneurship skills of high school students, while raising awareness of the business issues that companies face worldwide developing the skills of producing innovative solutions to global business problems. This year, Saint Kentigern College had twenty-four students split across six teams spanning Years 10-13 participating in the competition.
“The standard of entries in this competition is highly competitive,” said Mr Brian Peel, Head of Faculty – Commerce. “We have managed in recent years as a college to have groups awarded in the top four. To place first requires not only creativity in coming up with innovative solutions but also substantial, meaningful research coupled with highly effective presentation skills.”
