More used to clear skies and bright sunshine, our good friends from the Anglican Church Grammar School, better known as Churchie, were in for a surprise when they visited Auckland this week. After a run of great weather, they stopped by Shore Road on two days when Auckland received bouts of torrential downpours that brought parts of the city to a standstill!
The ‘Churchie’ boys were here on a sports exchange to New Zealand and have often hosted our own teams when we have travelled to Australia, so there have been strong bonds forged between our two schools over the years.
Our visitors arrived on Wednesday night to be billeted by our Boys’ School families. As always, our billeting families opened their homes and many treated the Churchie boys to some of the wonderful attractions around Auckland.
Come game day, Auckland turned on some pretty miserable weather! Plenty of rain fell, at times in bucket loads, but this did little to dampen the boys’ spirits as they took to their games with determination. The Boys’ School Year 7 teams came away with a 5-0 victory in the football and a 29-5 victory in the rugby.
Although wins were achieved, the day was more about the experience and strengthening our relationship with our friends from ‘across the ditch.’ The boys enjoyed a shared lunch before saying goodbye. We look forward to seeing them again in the near future, maybe next time in Australia!
