Waterpolo Third in North Island

April 08, 2016 at 1:47 PM

Over last weekend, the Premier Boys Waterpolo team competed in the North Island Championships.

The team went through the first day of pool play undefeated coming away with wins over Green Bay 11-2, Sacred Heat B 11-7 and St Bernard’s 19-2.

Pool play wrapped up on Sunday morning with the boys going down in a tight game to Aquinas 9-8, leaving them 2nd in their pool.

The loss in pool play meant a quarter-final show down on Sunday night with Auckland finalists, King’s. Play was close throughout and the boys managed to equalise in the last few seconds of the game to send it to a penalty shoot-out. The team won the game on the shoot-out to progress to a semi-final against Grammar.

Monday’s semi-final against Grammar was very close, again going to penalty shoot-out. A string of saves from the eventual tournament MVP put Grammar through to the final, leaving the boys to play for bronze.

The bronze final match was against Aquinas and after 4 quarters, the boys came out on top 12-8 placing them 3rd in the North Island, which is the first medal in history for Saint Kentigern College at a North Island championship. Well done boys!

The team now prepares for the national championships to be held in Wellington from the 23-26th of April.
