A Tennis Player to Watch!

August 18, 2017 at 2:35 PM

Boys’ School Year 8 tennis player, Christoph Grant will be one to watch as he moves through the ranks. Christoph has just spent three weeks at a tennis academy in Spain discovering the incredible standard and dedication of the Junior European players, as well as learning the techniques of playing clay court tennis.

After the first week of training in Spain, Christoph played in his first Tennis Europe Junior Tour tournament, playing at competitive level for the first time on clay. He did unbelievably well and surprised his Spanish coaches by winning through the qualifying event, and then kept on winning to make the final, encountering French, Italian, Moroccan, Greek and Spanish boys along the way - all players who usually only play on clay. He was beaten by a Russian boy in the final who proved to be a very experienced and skilled clay courter, who well deserved his win.

Christoph said that his opportunity to receive coaching in Spain was a fantastic experience and as a result he has discovered that he loves the ‘red dirt game’ which relies mostly on strategy and fitness - there are no short or easy points, and mistakes and short balls are very easily punished! He said,

‘You must always think 2-3 balls ahead, which suits my playing style.’

Well done Christoph, we’ll look forward to seeing you back at school on Monday!
