Our College 1st XV got off to a good start at the beginning of the year with pre-season games going according to plan. A good hit out against St Peters Cambridge, followed by a close win against Hastings Boys, a close loss to Sacred Heart College and a good finish over Whangarei Boys.
The team went into the Presbyterian Quad feeling good. They put together a strong performance on Lindisfarne, facing a formidable team in Scots College which is a much bigger pack that had a much bigger bite. Armed with a lot of patience and persistence, our College team came away victors in a well fought game, keeping our run of wins at the Quad.
Looking at the regular season, the College team felt confident as the games commenced, having 2 good performances against Liston College and newcomers St Pauls College. They encountered a hard game at home with De La Salle, and then the game of the round with Grammar, as the boys dominated in the first half and never looked back. Getting to the semi-finals was always the goal and when De La Salle had a 2nd bite at the cherry, they did not disappoint. De La Salle played a game that the College boys had to chase and ended with a draw. Rules of the first try wins meant that we went through to the finals. Unfortunately, the run came to an end for us with Sacred Heart College winning the title in another encounter where the College team were chasing the game which was a bit too far for them to reach.
It was a great effort from our College team getting into the 1A final. We will no doubt look forward to getting to the finals again next year.
