A Showcase of Busking Talent

June 06, 2018 at 1:43 PM

While normally a quiet place to sit and read, the Saint Kentigern Girls’ School library was filled with music notes all May long.

During their lunch breaks, students were encouraged to sign up for busking sessions and share their vocal, dance and musical talents with classmates in celebration of New Zealand Music Month.

The idea behind the busking sessions is to create a chance for students to become comfortable performing live in front of an audience in a supportive environment.

‘I tell them they can sort out what they want to play, and I facilitate the set up and provide the instruments,’ Girls’ School Music Teacher Mrs Nicola Brown said about the busking sessions.

Students played everything from the violin, keyboard and woodwind instruments. The biggest busking group this year was the Kapa Haka group, who are well-noted for their fantastic level of performance.

The purpose of NZ Music Month is to celebrate New Zealand music and the people who make it. What started as a simple encouragement for radio stations to play more local tunes is now a month-long celebration of homegrown talent across the country and even in the library!

Well done, girls! Let’s give them a round of applause!
