Romeo and Juliet – Demystified

May 20, 2021 at 11:56 AM

With thanks to Speech and Drama Teacher, Mrs Judy Norton

During Term 1 and 2, our Girls’ School Senior students spent time learning about the history of William Shakespeare and The Globe Theatre before turning their attention to his plays.

In English, the Year 7 and 8 students studied the famous play, Romeo and Juliet. They explored the language, the plot, and key scenes before watching it unfold in real life.

Three very talented Ugly Shakespeare Company performers, Francesca Browne, Caitlin Stevenson and Isabella Kerridge visited the Girls’ School to retell the story of Romeo and Juliet in a more demystified, modern way. Placed in a modern context and using references that the girls were familiar with, the performance was very beneficial and helped the girls better understand the story of two young Italian star-crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families.

The Year 8 students will now use the play as a devising stimulus for their Advanced Junior Oral Assessments that they are sitting near the end of term, and the Year 7 students will utilise the play to develop skills in script performance.

We thank Francesca, Caitlin and Isabella for their outstanding performance and for bringing laughter and joy into our day.
