College senior and leading Piper, André Mason has been presented with The Pipe Majors Dirk award at the first formal College assembly of the year. Head of College, Mr Steve Cole presented the leadership award to the Year 13 student who has been a member of the Pipes & Drums Band since joining the College in Year 7.
The Dirk is a Highland short sword worn at the waist on ceremonial occasions by the Pipes and Drums Pipe Major. Historically a prized possession as an important weapon, this regimental pattern also holds an officer’s cutlery; a Victorian soldier’s virtual Swiss army knife for when out in the field. In this day and age, it is equally prized, but more as a traditional symbol of service, obedience and stewardship.
It was first presented in 2003 by Old Boys’ Association President Andrew Jarvie, to student Dougal MacIntyre. This was to mark the occasion of the 50th Jubilee Reunion Old Boys’ dinner held in London, during the band’s UK tour. The Dirk is now worn with pride each year by successive Pipe Majors.
