Photo finish! Girls’ School Years 4-8 Athletics Day

With the green, red, yellow, and blue house flags waving and the sun shining over the College grounds, a slew of excited students hastened to put down their bags and begin Athletics’ Day for another year. The Year 4 to 8 Athletics Day is always memorable, with each girl representing her house with pride, racing, throwing and jumping to put points on the board.

The starter calls the first row of girls up to the line. Bang! They’re off! The 100m sprints were the first to begin, with the rest of the events following. As the first girls dashed towards the finish line, classmates hollered and cheered from the sidelines down the track, carrying their friends right to the end. Parents and caregivers watched intently for their children and, as all do, provided water, snacks, and encouragement from the side.

The other events began soon after, with events running simultaneously and each year group on rotation. Every individual competed in a competitive or non-competitive category, earning points for their house and encouraging all to have a go. The events included the throws – discus and shot put; the 100m and 200m dash; and optional 400m and 800m races for those who like a long distance. The long jump was the only jumping event on the day, but a clear favourite when asking the girls what they enjoyed most. This was reflected in the huge smiles of delight as they soared through the air into the sandpit.

Perhaps the best part of each Athletics Day, with this one being no different, was how the girls spurred on one another. It wasn’t about who was the fastest or the strongest thrower but how each house could encourage its teammates to perform at their best. This attitude allows every girl to have a go, enjoying it whether she loves to run or not.

In true Saint Kentigern spirit, it would not be a sports event without a little friendly competition between houses. The overall house tallies for the day are as follows:

Thank you to our incredible staff, who braved the sun and set a foundation of encouragement, laughter, and fun for the day. We look forward to seeing our champions compete against other schools later in the year.
