Twice a year, our College Middle School students who are taking part in the itinerant music programme, have the opportunity to perform at an informal and friendly recital evening.
The first of these evenings was held this week in the Music Centre, and despite the rain, a large turnout of family and friends showed up to support the Year 7-10 students.
Teacher in Charge of Middle School Music, Mr Kristian Holmes explained that the instrumental evenings are a great opportunity for the students to perform in front of a live audience. These may be students who are learning a musical instrument for the first time as well as those who may already be proficient on an instrument.
The concert is also an ideal learning platform for those students who are considering studying music as an academic subject in Years 11-13.
The evening’s acts included solo artists performing on popular brass instruments such as the trumpet, saxophone and flute, to the piano and electric guitar, and the less commonly played accordion. Collaborating together as ensembles were the Middle School’s Sinfonia, Rock Bands and Pipes & Drums.
From the classically sung ‘Ten Guitars’ by Sid Chand, who told the crowd he had been practising every day this year, to the Middle School Rock Band’s upbeat version of ‘April Sun in Cuba,’ the pieces on offer had something for everyone.
The hours the students had dedicated to polishing their performances in preparation were evident. Well done to all students for their tremendous practise efforts resulting in a great night of musical entertainment.
