Celebrating each other’s differences was the central theme of a series of workshops the Year 8 girls at the College took part in last week. Messages about the importance of having a positive body image can be more powerful if delivered by one’s peers, so a group of Year 10 students took on the role of facilitating the workshops. The workshops focussed on how images are manipulated using Photoshop, celebrity influence, Barbie dolls, and celebrating yourself.
The activities included looking at images of bodies before and after they have been digitally altered, discussing the impact celebrities have on our views, and the influence dolls can have on opinions of what girls wear, how they act and their role in society. The ‘celebrating yourself’ workshop considered how girls can be tough on themselves and encouraged the students to write positive comments about the other members of their group that weren’t about appearance.
Well done to the Year 10 girls for their leadership and to the Year 8 students for their enthusiasm!
