Family and friends came together last night to celebrate the emerging talent of our Year 7-10 musicians at the Middle College Music Evening. The fantastic evening held at the Music Centre was a chance for students to showcase their skills and what they have learnt this year in an informal and supportive environment.
Head of Middle College Music, Mr Oliver Gilmour said, whether they were just starting out, or an accomplished musician, this was a chance for students to shine, build confidence, and gain experience.
The evening brought all abilities, levels, groups and soloists together, and was a unique opportunity for instrumentalists who would usually play within an ensemble or orchestra to perform solo.
The music programme at the College has continued to grow over the years, and is an ideal learning platform for students who are considering studying music in their senior years. There are now more than 400 students learning an instrument or receiving voice tuition from over 30 specialist itinerant tutors - these students are given the opportunity on a weekly basis to take advantage of specialist staff and wide range of instruments.
The evening’s acts opened with the Saint Kentigern Pipes and Drums 2nd Band playing the stirring ‘Highland Cathedral’ followed by the Saint Kentigern Piano and Accordion Trio who gave a great performance.
We were fortunate enough to enjoy the first ever public performance from the Middle College Girls’ Choir, who beautifully sang ‘In Flanders Fields’ and ‘Alexander Tilley’.
The rest of the evening was jam packed with talent from solo, duet and group performers on vocals, the piano, violin, clarinet, saxophone, guitar, drums and flute.
The evening concluded with the Saint Kentigern Wind Band playing, ‘American Folk Song Suite’ and ‘Colonel Bogey’s March’.
There was something for everyone to enjoy on the night and the performances showcased a stunning array of talent and love for music.
Thank you to all the musicians for a wonderful evening of entertainment.
