Our 1st XV rugby world cup stars are set to shine in the limelight once again when they make their television debut on ‘Matariki Magic’, a two-hour spectacular concert celebrating New Zealand’s young achievers that will be screening live on Maori Television.
Airing on Saturday 22 June at 7.30pm from the Pacific Events Centre in Manukau, our boys will be interviewed on their recent win at the Sanix World Rugby Youth Tournament in Japan, their commitment to the game, team and College, along with fellow young people from kindergarten to high school who have excelled in their given field.
In a lead up to the programme, the Maori Television film crew recently visited the College to capture promotional footage of the team’s training session. No sooner had the boys started their drills out on the field, the overcast and wet weather conditions quickly changed and the clouds parted to reveal bright sunshine!
After the film crew had given the boys their instructions all of the team members performed like naturals once the camera was rolling, re-enacting kicks, tries and tackles with the skill, enthusiasm and professionalism that has taken them to the very top of their game.
The programme will be hosted by Matai Smith - New Zealand’s Best Presenter for 2012 – and two young co-presenters, and is named after Matariki, the star cluster that heralds the start of the MÄÂÂori New Year. Occurring in the pre-dawn sky from mid to late June each year, Matariki was traditionally a time to prepare for the year ahead, a time to learn and a time to celebrate the future; a heralding of the Maori New Year.
The event is a part of the Matariki Festival 2013 which celebrates this ancient Maori tradition and runs from 22 June– 22 July. Auckland will come alive with a series of concerts, family events, and traditional celebrations from art exhibits, kapa haka, contemporary dance and kite flying for all of the community to come together and enjoy.
Join us in watching Matariki Magic and help to support our exceptionally talented College 1st XV.
