Grace and Manase Perform Live at College Chapel Service

March 20, 2013 at 9:30 AM

At recent Sunday evening House Chapels, an item that has become the subject of much admiration has been the duet sung by Manase Latu and Grace Sturgess. The two talented Year 13 choralists came together to sing ‘The Prayer’ by David Foster; a moving piece that has been made popular by many ‘popera’ (operatic pop) singers. Of note, sections were sung in Italian by the pair.

Both Manase and Grace are well known in choral circles at the College for their rapidly emerging talent. Manase, in particular, won the Saint Kentigern Solo Music competition last year, ahead of many accomplished instrumentalists, delivering his song in German. He was delighted to be chosen ahead of a number of tertiary students last year to join the prestigious University of Auckland Chamber Choir. Directed by Dr Karen Grylls, the choir was formed in 2006 to give young people with outstanding vocal talent the chance to perform as part of an elite chamber ensemble. It comprises mostly University of Auckland students and graduates who work as professional performers, making Manase’s accomplishment all the more significant.

Deputy Head Girl of Bruce House, Grace has been taking singing lessons with former student and current voice teacher, Lachlan Craig since she started at Saint Kentigern in Year 9. Both Grace and Manase have been chosen for the lead parts in this year’s College musical, West Side Story.

The pair also sang ‘The Prayer’ at the Jubilee Chapel Service where Old Collegian, Calvin Sang recorded their live performance.
