Girls' School Lean for Dean!

September 18, 2013 at 2:44 PM

In a show of support for Emirates Team New Zealand, the girls came to school today sporting red socks. They were quite a sight walking up Remuera Road to chapel this morning!

To open the service, Reverend Reuben Hardie told the girls about the amazing leadership qualities of both Sir Peter Blake in earlier America’s Cup campaigns and now Grant Dalton as he leads the 2013 campaign.

Sir Peter Blake is well remembered for wearing his red socks for good luck during the America's Cup challenge of 1995 and, at the time, New Zealanders supported the boat by putting on their own red socks. Today, Sir Peter's lucky red socks have become a symbol of Kiwi spirit and leadership in action, what it means to be a New Zealander - and to remember a Kiwi legend who was so tragically killed.

Today all our thoughts are with Grant Dalton, Dean Barker and the crew of the Emirates Team New Zealand as they endeavour to bring the America’s Cup back to New Zealand. The girls put on a ‘Lean for Dean’ to help spur the team on for another race win!

We have an extra reason to be proud of this team. Grant Dalton is an Old Collegian of Saint Kentigern, having attended both the Boys’ School and the College.

Go Emirates Team New Zealand! Saint Kentigern is right behind you!
