It really was a matter of four seasons in one day for the Girls’ School Athletics Sports Day held at the Pakuranga Athletic Club at Lloyd Elsmore Park this week. As the bright sun began to burn away the morning cloud, the sky quickly darkened, the wind picked up and the showers began.
But in true sportsmanship the girls simply hunkered down into their jackets, many jumping on the spot to keep warm while they waited for their turn in the running, jumping and throwing events. The gazebos this year managed to double as both sun and rain shelters for the students and staff! Thankfully the cold and wet quickly passed with the sun shining through once again for the rest of the morning.
Last year the Girls’ School Athletics Sports Day included all girls from Years 0-8, but in a break from tradition this year the Year 4-8 Middle and Senior School girls competed in their own track, high jump, long jump, discus and shotput events. The Junior School Years 0-3 will hold their own combined athletics day in the second week of November.
The morning ran very smoothly and was well organised thanks to all event staff running their charges like clockwork and the ‘gappies’ providing support in their designated jobs. The girls enjoyed the opportunity to participate in and experience their own personal success and join in the friendly rivalry of gaining house points for the overall competition.
A presentation of final placings in each event is to be held at school assembly and an overall athletics champion for each year level will receive a medal. The overall Junior and Senior Champion will receive a trophy and selected winners of the day will go on to represent Saint Kentigern in the Year 5/6 Remuera Zone Competition.
Thank you to the parents and friends who came along to support the girls for their day where they gave their sporting best.
