Last night over 300 parents and students gathered in the College Chapel to hear former All Black great, Sir John Kirwan address the topic of coping with anxiety and depression. Along with the co-authors of his book ‘Stand by Me,’ psychologists Kirsty and Dr Elliot Louden-Bell, Sir John shared his own story, aided by his friends.
At times we all face challenges to our mental health. For some, the challenge can become overwhelming as depression and anxiety take hold, changing the way we think, feel and deal with tough times. It affects each of us differently. Last night, the audience heard both a clinical and personal perspective about these significant mental health issues and how we can best help our young people to deal with it.
Following the talk, guests were invited to the Goodfellow Centre for refreshments and a chance to meet our speakers. Sir John has been on a mission for 17 years now as the face of good mental health for thousands of New Zealanders affected by this illness. We were delighted to have him come and share his story of hope and determination with us.
Some of Sir John’s key messages included…
'Depression is an illness, not a weakness'
'Depression is a journey, not a destination'
'Wellness is every day'
'Stop and taste the coffee, the feel of water from the shower'
'Concentrate on the day'
'Never give up, but stop fighting it'
'Medication gives you balance, enables you to address the depression, to get the help you need'
