Following on from the Middle College Year 7 Science Fair earlier in the term, a number of selected projects were forwarded on to the Manukau Region NIWA Science Fair. Judging took place last week followed by a special prizegiving ceremony last night.
We are delighted that Frances Revell-Devlin scooped the Environmental Special Award for her project entitled, ‘Plastic Tsunami.’ Frances had tested beach quality, turning her attention to the degree of plastic particles in the sand, proving her hypothesis, that South Auckland beaches, which are closest to manufacturing areas, had the largest amount of plastic waste. At a time when there is increasing focus on the use and misuse of plastic across the spectrum, and the impact it is having on our environment, this was a timely and well-researched project.
Highly Commended awards went to two more Middle College students. Imogen Perry was awarded in the Physical and Material World category for her project, ‘Who’s the Strongest?’ which tested the strength of various recycled papers. Charlotte Muir was also awarded a Highly Commended in the Environmental Science, Planet Earth and beyond category for her project, ‘Clean or Contaminated.’
New to the area and looking for a place to swim, Charlotte wondered why people could be seen swimming at Bucklands Beach but not at the Panmure Basin and set about testing water quality.
Well done to these three girls for their successful science investigations!
