Following on from the Boys’ School Eastern Zone and Inter Zone Football win, it was the turn of the Hockey 1st XI this week when they won the Eastern Zone Hockey Tournament.
The qualifiers were split into two pools of four teams. The level of competition was high this year with the games requiring the boys to focus on their team skills, ensuring they kept possession and communicated clearly with each other.
The first game was against King’s School and having lost to them in the previous two fixtures, they knew they had a tough game ahead. The boys played well, had many opportunities to score but at the final whistle were beaten by one goal. The second game, against St Thomas’s School, ended with a surprise 0-0 draw, leaving our boys with the task of having to score at least nine goals in the third game against Panmure to qualify for the semi-finals – thankfully the result went our way with a 12-0 score at the final whistle.
The semi-final was against Sacred Heart and this, again, was another hard-fought game with Saint Kentigern coming out on top, 3-0, to proceed to the final against King’s.
The final was a test of determination and perseverance. Man-on-man marking in defence was always going to be the challenge of this game as any slip in concentration would result in a goal being scored against us. At half time the score was 0-0. During the second half, both teams had opportunities to score but in the last few minutes, a solid hit towards the goal from Max Trankels was then deflected by Maxim Zurflueh to score the winning goal! A tremendous effort to end the day as the Eastern Zone Champions!
Congratulations to all the boys – not only did they finish the day as champions, but they displayed Saint Kentigern values throughout the day, both on and off the field.
Our sincere thanks to Parent Manager, Mrs Aryanne Trankels and the team of parents who supported us all day. A great outcome for our boys!
