September 01, 2023 at 10:41 AM

In a year filled with challenges and uncertainties, the spirit of giving and compassion has shone brightly at Saint Kentigern College. The students and staff have once again demonstrated their unwavering commitment to positively impacting the world. This year, they raised a remarkable $95,165 for the World Vision 40-Hour Challenge, a testament to the College's dedication to charitable causes.

Saint Kentigern College has a longstanding relationship with World Vision and has consistently ranked among the top fundraising schools in the country for many years. This year was no exception, as the College continued its partnership with World Vision, focusing its efforts on supporting communities in Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands.

This year's fundraising efforts were highlighted during a whole College assembly on 1 September. It was a momentous occasion as Mr Grant Bayldon, the CEO of World Vision New Zealand, graced the group to recognise the College's outstanding contributions. He presented the College with two awards that underscored the significance of our efforts.

The first award - the Milestone Award - honoured the College's impressive track record in fundraising for World Vision. Since its initial involvement in the 40-Hour Famine in 1984, the College has raised a staggering $2,329,469. This incredible achievement is a testament to the commitment of the college community to make a lasting difference in the lives of those less fortunate.

The second award, the Ngakau Aroha Compassion Award, celebrated the College's embodiment of kindness and compassion within its community and beyond. This award acknowledged the College's dedication to raising funds and spreading love and empathy, qualities at the heart of the World Vision mission.

The celebrations didn't stop there. The College took the opportunity to recognise the individual efforts of its students who went above and beyond in their fundraising endeavours. Students who raised $500 or more were honoured with certificates and badges at Middle School and Senior School Assemblies. At the Full School Assembly, the top five students who stood out for their remarkable contributions were celebrated:

  1. Shu Kay Wong (11LEH5) - $4,056
  2. Claire Lu (7MGW) - $1,518
  3. Sam Gerber (13GHP2) - $1,370
  4. Archie Lipscombe (7HSP) - $1,351
  5. Megan Chen (8PAE) - $1,040

The collective efforts of these students not only made a significant impact on the fundraising total and served as an inspiration to their peers, demonstrating the power of our global vision and compassion.

Moreover, the Year 7 and 8 World Vision Shield was awarded to Ms Megan William's tutor group, 7MGW, for their outstanding fundraising efforts, raising the most money among their peers.

In a symbolic gesture, Duncan McQueen and Grant Bayldon presented the Stark House flag to the House Leaders, as they emerged as the top fundraising house overall.

As the college community reflects on this year's incredible achievements in the World Vision 40-Hour Challenge, we are reminded of the profound impact their collective compassion can have on the world. The College continues to be a shining example of how education and empathy can change lives, one charitable endeavour at a time.
