This week was the first opportunity for the Product Design students to showcase their year’s work at an exhibition held in the Jack Paine Centre. The display celebrated the work produced by the Senior School students and was a chance for their peers, visitors and parents to view the designs after business hours.
The design briefs that the Year 11-13 students worked with this year were: Level 1, 'Sound and Light;’ Level 2, 'Sit Down;' and Level 3 'Multi Material'. Despite only 6 credits available at the different levels, students spent many hours on their work, some in excess of 40 and 50.
The brief involved designing and assembling a piece of work for a chosen client that was suitable for their client’s environment and of a high quality. The students also had to work with new materials and processing methods that they had not used previously, and use construction of a mixture and combination of materials.
The students’ task was also to ensure that their design was completed on time for display and include supporting materials such as development drawings, PowerPoint displays, inspirational research and production photos. Whilst the prototypes were completed in the College workshops, some necessary components were made offsite by contractors, and the students later assembled these into their product on site.
