With a gloriously sunny start to the new school year, it was the turn of Year 7 to be the first of the year groups to head away to camp – unfortunately during the same week that Cyclone Winston was beginning to wreak havoc in the Pacific with the ’damp’ flow on effect to New Zealand!
116 boys headed off to MacLaren Falls in Tauranga in high spirits and soon discovered the challenge of pitching their tents in blustery conditions! The boys spent the week under canvas relishing the opportunity to participate in a wide range of water-based activities such as surfing, windsurfing and surf lifesaving. The water-based activities they hadn’t bargained on were cooking dinner and fire building in increasingly ‘damp’ conditions!
Sadly by the fourth day, as conditions were worsening, the decision was made to make an early return to Auckland, where they stayed in ‘camp mode’ and finished the week with some fun-filled team and confidence-building activities.
With a new intake of boys at Year 7 each year, joining those who have already been at the School for up to six years, this camp is strategically timed to bring new class groupings together and provide a melting pot away from the classroom. By the end of the week, new friendships were formed and the boys returned having enjoyed the experience – despite the wind and rain!
